Since the ocean has amazing conditions right now there is a lot of work recently. In the last weeks there were several Molchanovs Wave 1 and Wave 2 courses here in Siargao. Also I made a lot of training sessions with freedivers that wanted to improve their techniques.

Furthermore I started renting out gear and started a cooperation with Sanghinga from Manila.

Still got more then two amazing months

Even if most of the locals looking forward to the comeback of the big waves – we freedivers still have more then two good months with great conditions. The Freediving community in Siargao is getting bigger and bigger and once the Olympic Pool in Dapa Sports Complex is fixed, I will run a regular training there. Since I am AIDA, SSI and Molchanovs instructor – I will combine the best from all associations there like I also do it in my courses.

BTW – if you are a surfer freediving is also interesting for you. With the ability to hold your breath longer and to know your body better you gonna be more relaxed on the board and your surfing will imporve.

Freediving is a very complex sport. But in my mind there are two major skills to really enjoy freediving and be able to become part of the ocean. It is relaxation and equalization. If you are struggling with a proper equalization there are amazing videos and exercises that I send everyone that contacts me. Because if all is good with EQ we can handle the rest in a coaching session.

Since the Philippines finally opened their borders tourists coming back to Siargao and more people contacted me about training sessions, which I actually did not offered. But recently I gave it a chance and the result have been two amazing sessions, two super happy students, incredible new PBs and a new Molchanovs Wave 2 Freediver.

Relaxation is the key

One of my speciality is relaxation and this is the most important skill for a freediver – to be able to relax on point. So the first session started with some breathing theory, breathing exercises, relaxation exercises and meditation. After, we had an amazing first open water session with one buoy set up for both of them and new PBs for both of the students. After the session Ronja  asked if it might be possible to make the Molchanovs Lap 2 to Wave 2 upgrade. After I saw her freediving and her progress within only one session I said that we can try but without any pressure.

So we met again two days later. At first we made a nice pranayama session right at the ocean to prepare for the dive and to calm down and then we went into the ocean. At stunning conditions Ronja and Aurélien made this session amazing. No matter if a new PB of 31m for Aurélien or perfect rescue, beautiful freefall and chilled 28m for Ronja – both changed and improved their diving so much within two sessions. We ended up with some CNF and in the end Ronja is a proud Molchanovs Wave 2 Freediver now.

Long time since the last news and for sure tons of things has happened.

If you haven’t heard, super typhoon Odette hit our beautiful island with winds of up to 300km/h in december last year. It was a nightmare – so many people lost erveything and the island will not look the same for years. But it was also a point where you could see how amazing Siargao`s community is. People from everywhere helped and so everyone did what she or he could do.

We also did our part and got to know a lot of amazing people on the way.

Back in the ocean – freedive and forget

It took a while to get back in the ocean – to be honest it was the beginning of may. The ocean was still pretty choppy but after two training sessions I set the first “Pre Odette Courses”. It was a Molchanovs Wave1 and a Molchanovs Wave 2 Freediving course (which BTW was the first Molchanovs Wave 2 course ever in Siargao). What should I say? It was amazing.

The students did their best at the sometimes rough conditions – but if you can enjoy freediving at this conditions everything else will be like a bathtub

So in the end I had two amazing and happy students and finally found a perfect spot for the open water sessions. Surrounded by two beautiful islands I found an about 35m deep spot with crystal clear water. Since then I am visiting this place quite a lot with students and friends. Freediving helped me to forget what happened, too.

Siargao (Philippines) is still definetely worth a trip and the swell is gone so we have amazing conditions for learning how to freedive in paradise. For the pool sessions we have an amazing 50m pool in Dapa’s sports complex. For the open water sessions the ocean made us fall in love with it’s beauty at Stimpy’s. So it really is a great place to make you first steps in freediving and also to improve your knowledge.

Combined with the beauty of nature of this little paradise island in the Philippines you will have an experience you will never forget.

For that reason I am planning a permanent setup to conncet a freediving buoye to in the bay of Santa Fe. This really could be a game changer for freediving in General Luna, Santa Fe and all Siargao. If we can provide good freediving conditions more and more people will start freediving here.

To make this happen I started to talk to the Barangay Santa Fe and we will submit our proposal at DENR soon.

So fingers crossed and let’s hope all will work out.

Not just courses – unforgetable adventures

Even though I will teach Molchanovs I don’t just want to make a random course like at other places. We will explore the beauty of Siargao and at the open water dives we will rent a boat to go out. Having lunch at a beautiful island and planning the next session there.
The main focus on my freediving courses will always be relaxation and a proper technique and I can guarantee a lot of fun.

I also will start my instagram page soon and most probably also publish my course dates there.

The year 2020 has probably not delivered for anyone what was expected before. I personally look back on a very exciting and thrilling year.

I could train for a long time in Panglao and improve my freediving skills a lot. In addition, I fell in love with my (since recently) wife and with the Philippines. We have been in Moalboal on Cebu Island for a total of four months during the lockdown. Now we will go back soon and settle down there.

Of course I will continue to offer freedive courses in Moalboal. Already during my stay I fell in love with the varied underwater world. Wonderful reefs, colorful fish, water turtles, bait balls made of sardines and with a lot of luck also manta rays or a whale shark make every dive an experience. But of course it also goes into the depth. In Moalboal you can reach a depth of 50m without any problems.

All this paired with water temperatures between 25 and 31° Celsius make the freediving experience perfect.

I mainly train according to the Molchanovs system, as this is the purest “freediving system”. But also courses according to SSI and AIDA are possible.
